What is pond vacuuming and how does it work?
Vacuuming is a great way to remove leaf debris, fish waste, plant waste, and algae from your pond. Because it’s less intensive than other methods, it’s a quick and easy form of maintenance without the need for draining.
Using a water pump to draw water through a specialised container, pond vacuums collect dirt, debris, and silt from the bottom of your pond. A discharge pump then carries the clean water back into the pond, so no volume is lost. This will give it a well-kempt look, and afterwards the water can be treated as required. Often, collected silt can even be used as fertiliser for your garden.
Does my pond need vacuuming?
This is a great service for anyone who struggles to maintain their pond between regular cleans. If, for example, there are nearby trees which litter your pond with debris, or a dense ecosystem of fish and plants living in it, the water can become murky and discoloured. So, if you’re worried about your garden pond or fishpond looking unmaintained, it’s worth giving this method a try.
Between quarterly “deep cleans” – where plants, fish, and water are all removed for a thorough scrub – we recommend a combination of regular water top-ups and light cleaning methods such as vacuuming. These can be scheduled in advance according to your needs.
